Portuguese Heritage Band Project 2007

Beginning in November 2006, thirty-four musicians from several bandas filarmonicas in Ontario gathered to participate in the creation of a one-of-a-kind recording featuring the traditional music of bandas filarmonicas. It was a musical collaboration never before experienced in the history of Bandas Filarmonicas in Canada. Over a ten-week period of rehearsals, egos were set aside and long-lasting friendships were formed as everyone worked diligently to focus on developing musicality, technique, and coming together quickly as a group.

The recording session took place in mid January 2007 at the River Run Centre in Guelph, Ontario. By March 2007, the Portuguese Heritage Band Project officially released its full-featured recording entitled Across the Ocean: The Music of Bandas Filarmonicas, and subsequently performed a series of concerts to promote the project. The opening concert was held in London, Ontario followed one week later by a concert in Toronto. The recording was aired on CBC Radio Two within one month of the release date and has been distributed in Canada, the United States and in Portugal.
